Author Blog Tour

Thank you, Linda Broday (insert link), for inviting me to come along on this Author Blog Tour!
Everyone hop on board and travel with us!

1. What am I working on?

I am knee-deep in the final edits of my second Creative Non-Fiction novel, “The Convict and the Rose.” This story is a sequel to my first book, “Flowers and Stone.” It begins at Leavenworth Penitentiary with Luke Stone, one of the main characters, arriving for a lengthy stay. He is bitter, angry and rebellious about being convicted of a crime he did not commit. The other main character, Darlina Flowers, left alone without the man who holds her heart, flounders at the task of trying to live without Luke. Throughout this story, we see tremendous growth in both characters as they face what would appear to be insurmountable obstacles...From literal shackles and chains to drugs and a guru.

.

Along with each book I write, I release a music CD of authentic and original music. “Forty Foot High” is the CD that accompanies “The Convict and the Rose.” It is a compilation of music that was recorded in a makeshift studio inside Leavenworth Penitentiary. The title song is the only track not recorded in prison. All of the songs on this CD were written by Rick Sikes. The title song is performed by Jamie Richards, who is a talented singer/songwriter in his own right. (Check out the samples on my web-page

1. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

My work differs from other Creative Non-fiction stories in that they contain characters and dialog written in fiction form. Because the stories are very personal, it was the only way I could separate myself enough to actually write them. Even though they are true stories, they are entertaining and contain all of the elements of fiction writing. The fact that I produce music to accompany each book is also unique and something I absolutely love doing!

2. Why do I write what I do?

The main characters of my stories are Rick Sikes (my late husband aka Luke Stone) and myself (aka Darlina Flowers). Our story is unique and for years, we were told by many people who came to know us that someone should write it. When Rick passed away in 2009, I began to think along those lines and searched for someone to do just that. I awoke one morning to the realization that the only person who could write it was me since I was the one who lived it. So, I took classes, studied everything I could find from sentence structure to formatting. The story is a series of three books and since I’m about to release the second one, I have one more to go. Once the three books and music CDs are completed, I will write a screenplay for a movie.
I love writing and will never stop!

3  How does your writing process work?

Since my stories are true, I don’t have to make up anything. However, for the second book, I had to do lots of research through archives of letters, newspaper and magazine articles and even contacted a prison official for some information, as I was not physically locked up with Rick.
All of that being said, once I am finished with “our” story, I would like to try my hand at fiction writing.

The Convict And The Rose

The Convict And The Rose is a true story of a man convicted of a crime he didn't commit and a woman who never stopped loving him..

Luke Stone, a veteran Texas musician, arrived at Leavenworth Penitentiary angry, bitter and rebellious. He'd lost everything he treasured in life. It took him several years and lots of time in solitary confinement to figure out that he wasn't going to change prison and prison wasn't going to change him. He searched his soul and decided that it was time to be and be something worthwhile. In an extremely negative place, he learned to think and act positive.

A young Darlina Flowers, left alone and broken without the man who held her heart struggled to find her way. She turned to drugs, followed a guru, tried relationships, all the while longing for Luke to be freed. Their constant love became their North Star.

Luke determinedly clawed his way up from the bottom a tiny step at at time. His saving grace was music and artistic expression. He wrote hundreds of songs and poems, learned to do oil painting, pen-and-ink drawings, leatherwork, American Indian beadwork and make ceramics. He stayed busy.

He advocated for and was finally granted permission. after many years, to build a recording studio inside the walls of prison. And that leads us to the CD part of this project.

Forty Foot High is a compilation of some of the music that was recorded inside the walls of Leavenworth. All except for the title song. I found the lyrics to Forty Foot High while doing research for the book and they really tugged at my heart. I'd never heard Rick Sikes sing the song and it wasn't recorded anywhere.
I asked Jamie Richards (a singer/songwriter) to put music to the lyrics and record it and he agreed. He totally captured the emotion of the song.

The book and CD together preserve a bit of history that might otherwise remain unknown.

THE TROUBADOR'S WOMAN

                         By Rick Sikes

When I was weary and the road was long
          You gave me a song
When I felt I'd traveled my last weary mile
          You gave me a smile
When there seemed no tunes left on my old guitar
I needed a melody, there you were
I sang of sorrow and hard times
But, found you easy on my mind
I had done all I could think to do
You gave me ideas fresh and new
                                  I grew restless and unsure
                                          Your understanding made me secure
They say a man's song is his soul

You are the story I have told.....

Let us have a good day today, for we are  making memories  for the future, carefully and gently to be tucked away."

As I wrote "Flowers and Stone", memories of the countless hours I rode beside Rick Sikes up and down the Texas roads to go play his music, came vividly. It was a lifestyle different than any other, and one that I fully and completely embraced. When I met Rick, he'd burned out and  it had become mundane and tiresome to play in the honky-tonks night after night after night. Many times, he'd sit out a complete set never getting on the stage, although he was the reason the places were packed over and over again. He'd lost sight of his dream.

It never once occurred to me that I could be a new fresh inspiration for him. I was just so enthralled with everything about him and never failed to tell him how incredibly talented he was.

The poem above, was written several years afterwards, while locked in prison, but it still gives me great joy to read the words and know that he wrote those words about me. Me, the little holy-roller girl from the desert was able to inspire someone like him. How?

The only answer I have to that question, is "LOVE", pure and simple. Never think for one minute that you can't inspire another person to follow their dream because you can, if you truly believe in them and the talent they have. Don't hesitate to be someone's inspiration!
